Mass murder begins
Mobile killing squads
With the invasion in June 1941 of the Soviet Union, in which an estimated 3.5 million Jews lived, a new phase in Nazi policy began. The Einsatzgruppen – special mobile killing squads were assigned to go into towns and villages to murder all ‘enemies of the Reich’. Their main victims were Jews. Men, women and children were rounded up and marched to the outskirts of their town or village and shot into mass graves. The Einsatzgruppen assisted by local collaborators were responsible for the ruthless murder of over 1 million Jews.
